Luke 9:23 - “And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’”
Jesus, show me the things in my life that keep me from pursuing you. Help me to leave those things behind so I can run hard after you! I want to throw off every sin that turns my heart away from you. I also want to throw off every good thing that I choose to lift up over the best thing: you.
The cost of following you pales in comparison to the joy I receive from being a disciple. I know that, “in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11)
When you faced the cross you faithfully endured it because of the joy set before you (Hebrews 12:2). What kind of joy could you have possibly seen in that incredible suffering? It was the joy of accomplishing our salvation so that we could be brought back into relationship with you. Give us eyes to see the greater joy of knowing you so that we can also endure the daily cross you call us to carry.
